About our tartans

FORFAR

The Forfar collection is one of our boldest. We created a bright block print floral jaal design to complement the muted tones of The Earl of Forfar tartan. On the 55th Birthday of Prince Edward, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II bestowed upon him the title of The Earl of Forfar, a title which dates back to 1661. To mark his inaugural visit to the town the Strathmore Woollen Co Ltd were commissioned to create a tartan to celebrate The Earl’s first official visit.

STEWART

Our Stewart collection is inspired by the rich Perthshire landscape where we live. The dark green, muted colours of the elegant hunting tartan are complemented by the beautiful jaal floral design. The Stewart Hunting Muted tartan is from The Stewart (or Stuart) clan who are one of the largest and well known as they have several branches (such at Atholl, Appin and Royal) and have a very rich history. A muted tartan reflects the colour of original tartans and what they were thought to have looked like historically due to the dyes available - such as berries, leaves etc.

STRATHDON

The luxurious palette of the Strathdon tartan pairs beautifully with the bird and floral bright teal hand block print. This tartan is inspired by the River Don in Aberdeenshire and represents the blue slate of the mountain scree, the deep maroon of the dark heather moors and the yellow brown of the sandy shale at the river edges.

STRATHTAY

Our Strathtay design is a vibrant red and green colour. The River Tay is in Perthshire where we are based. The tartan is influenced by the dramatic autumn colours of the wooded banks in the upper reaches of the river valley. We were drawn to the lush greens and reds that reflect the stunning landscape that surrounds us when we created this design.
